Voting is the backbone of our democracy, and should reflect the will of the people. That is the idea behind New York City’s 2019 vote, in which 73% of voters supported a ballot question changing our electoral process from a single choice plurality voting to a new system, known as ranked-choice voting (RCV). Following the lead of cities like Minneapolis and San Francisco, voters decided it was time to change the way we select the leaders in our local government.

Powerful DC37 union endorses 8 more candidates for NYC Council

Eight more City Council candidates have gotten a coveted endorsement from the DC37 union of municipal workers.

The powerful group said Sunday that it was backing Ischia Bravo, Eric Dinowitz, Pierina Sanchez and Marjorie Velazquez in the Bronx (they’re running in Districts 15, 11, 13 and 14, respectively); Crystal Hudson, Bridget Ann Rein and Kenya Handy-Hillard in Brooklyn (Districts 35, 39 and 40); and Nantasha Williams in Queens (District 27).

The Riverdale Press: Key Food settles union dispute, pays $90,000

Eric Dinowitz, a local educator and candidate for city council, was one of many who stood with the union workers in front of Key Food last summer, telling The Press in a statement he was “thrilled” that a settlement was reached.

“Our workers were able to have dignity and financial security because they have a union and a community that has their back, and protections that give workers the legal tools to stand up to selfish employers,” Dinowitz said. “It was inspiring and encouraging to see my brothers and sisters from the picket line back in the store, and great to see such strong support from the neighborhood.”

Eric Dinowitz, a special education public school teacher and candidate for City Council in the 11th District, has been endorsed by Congressman Adriano Espaillat. Espaillat is a New York City progressive, and was both the first formerly undocumented immigrant and first Dominican elected to Congress. Dinowitz had previously been endorsed by the United Federation of Teachers.
